A Walk in the Woods
Young Artists' Exhibition - October & November 2022
Information and How To Enter
PLEASE SHOW THESE GUIDELINES TO A PARENT OR CARER BEFORE YOU START. YOU WILL NEED THEIR PERMISSION TO ENTER THE EXHIBITION.
This is an open exhibition for young artists and writers aged 4 to 17 which will take place at the same time as our Green Gathering Exhibition for artists of 18 and over.
There is no entry fee and you have until Sunday 16th October to complete your work and bring it to The Green Man Gallery
The theme is A Walk in the Woods and we would like you to bring the magic and beauty of our woodlands into the gallery with your art work and creative writing.
Here's what you need to do...
1. Take a walk in a local wood with family members or friends (if you're old enough to do this) and take a notebook or sketchbook with you.
2. Create a piece of art (2D or 3D) or a piece of original writing inspired by what you found and experienced on your walk in the woods

Here's what you need to do...
1. Take a walk in a local wood with family members or friends (if you're old enough to do this) and take a notebook or sketchbook with you.
- Try to spend some of the time walking and some of the time standing or sitting still and quietly
- Look around you, listen, sniff the air, explore the textures with your hands
- You might like to write a few words to describe these things
- You might like to do some sketching while you're there, or take photographs
- You might like to make bark rubbings to use in your art work later on
- You might like to collect a few things - pine cones, acorns, dead leaves or twigs - to use in your art work. Please respect the woods and only take a few special treasures. Do not damage the trees and plants.
- KEEP SAFE AND DO NOT GO ALONE
2. Create a piece of art (2D or 3D) or a piece of original writing inspired by what you found and experienced on your walk in the woods
- Paintings, drawings, photos, collages, sculptures, poetry, illustrated stories… any art form is welcome.
- 2D work (for hanging on a wall) can be any size up to A3.
- 3D work: We can display small sculptures and models on a table top. If you have an idea for something large in 3D, please contact us before you start work on it as space is fairly limited.
3. Read these important details
- We would prefer you to put your 2D work in a frame if you can. (You can buy very affordable basic frames in Buxton at Village Saver or the Discount Centre!)
- We will also accept unframed work but we will have to attach it to the wall with pins.
- Please put your name on the back of your work (2D)
- Please wrap 3D work to protect it (e.g. bubble wrap or paper) and put your name on the wrapping.
- Poetry and stories: These can be typewritten or handwritten (as neatly and clearly as possible). Please be creative in the way you present them - use illustrations, patterned borders, interesting fonts and so on. You can make your writing into a book or a poster or put it in a frame (maximum A3)
- Download and print the Entry Form (below) and fill it in.
- If you can't print the form, there will be copies available at the gallery.
- Your parent or carer must sign this form
