The Spring Gathering 2024 - Guidelines for Artists and Makers
Online submission deadline: 1st March 2024
Delivery of art work: 8th to 24th March 2024 (check foot of page for opening times)
Apologies - the gallery will be closed on Sunday 10th March. Please don't try to deliver work on that day!
Exhibition dates: Friday 29th March to Wednesday 24th April 2024
Collection of unsold work: 26th April to 12th May 2024

How to make a submission – Deadline Wednesday 1st March 2024
1. Complete the Submission Form (link at bottom of page) and click the 'Submit' button. You have until 1st March but we advise you to submit your entry as soon as possible as space in the exhibition is limited and if we need to select pieces, we will do this on a first-come. first served basis.
2. Email one high resolution photograph (jpg) per entry (2D work) or several photos from different angles (3D work) to Caroline Small on hello@thegreenmangallery.com We will use your photos for publicity so please take them in good light. Natural daylight is best unless you have daylight bulbs. Work to be exhibited under glass should, if possible, be photographed without the glass to avoid reflections.
3. We will confirm your inclusion in the exhibition by email. You don't need to pay anything until we send you this invitation to exhibit. You can pay by BACS if you prefer, or by cash or card when you deliver your art work.
Delivering your work to the gallery
1. 2D work must be framed and strung, ready for hanging. Please do not attach mirror plates unless your work is very heavy. We cannot hang work in clip frames. Canvases can be hung unframed but they must be properly strung before delivery. if unsure, please ask.
2. 3D work: please supply everything needed for display on a table top (e.g. a stand if work is not free-standing)
3. Wrap your work well to protect it (e.g. in bubble wrap or Stiffy bag) and put a label with your full name on the outside of the packaging. Unsold work will be placed in its original packaging at the end of the exhibition.

We will ask you to sign our Terms & Conditions when you deliver your work and you will be given a receipt for your art work and submission fee.

What will The Green Man Gallery do for you?

The Green Man Gallery has no paid staff and a very small marketing budget. You are strongly advised to do as much promotion as you can, as widely as possible, through print publicity and online, and in particular to send invitations to people/galleries who you would like to see your work.

- The aim of the exhibition is to showcase, promote and celebrate recent original work by local artists and makers.
- The Green Man Gallery will promote the exhibition and the artists involved however exhibiting artists are also expected to promote their work and the exhibition to their own networks and on websites/social media in order to increase footfall and make the most of this opportunity.
- Our annual open exhibition regularly attracts a large number of submissions. We recommend that you send in your submission form and images as early as possible to be sure of being included in the live exhibition.
- Please note that we can only accept online submissions.
General Terms and Conditions
- The exhibition is for any artist over 18, professional or amateur, who lives or works in Derbyshire and the Peak District borders. (Staffordshire, East Cheshire, South Yorkshire etc)
- You can submit 2D or 3D work in any medium that is suitable for exhibition at The Green Man Gallery.
- We welcome painting, drawing, print-making, mixed-media, photography, textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glass and much more. If your work can be hung on a wall or displayed on a table, we would love to exhibit it.
- Unfortunately we don’t currently have the capacity to exhibit film, sound installations or other digital media.
- Work must be your own original piece(s) created within the last 3 years. We do not accept work created from kits or which is copied or derived from other artists' work.
- Size of work: 2D work maximum size: 36” x 36" (91.5cm x 91.5cm) including frame if any*

- *Oversize work: We may sometimes have space for larger work but we won't know until all of the submissions have come in. Please submit your work anyway and we will let you know shortly after 1st March whether we can include it. Very large work may have to count as two submissions. Larger work will generally be exhibited upstairs as the ground floor exhibition space is limited by the siz of our display screens.
- Maximum 2 submissions per person, depending on size. We may only have room for one piece if your work is very large. Small pieces of work (2D and 3D) which can be displayed in a group may count as one submission. We will advise you in our acceptance email.
- Submission fee: There is a fee of £8 for one submission or £15 for two, by BACS or by cash/card when you deliver your work.
- Sale of work: 30% commission is payable to The Green Man Gallery on any work sold during the exhibition. If your work is sold we will request your bank details. Payment will be made no more than two weeks after the end of the exhibition
- Promoting your work: Exhibiting artists must provide a statement to be included in the catalogue. We don't have space for statements next to the art works however artists are welcome to bring promotional materials (e.g. business cards, flyers) for display during the exhibition. Please bring these when you deliver your art work.

- Artists must ensure that fixings, hanging cords etc are appropriate for the size and weight of the work and are attached securely. The Green Man Gallery staff will take great care when carrying, storing and displaying art work. NB We cannot accept work in clip frames
- Artists must ensure that all items are safely wrapped/packaged and labelled when delivered.
- Gallery staff will do everything possible to ensure that art work is safe and secure while on display or in storage however all items are left at the artist’s own risk.
- The Green Man Gallery reserves the right to refuse art work which is unsafe or unsuitable for public exhibition.
Celebrate!
- As in previous years, we plan to launch the exhibition at a Social and Networking Event in the evening of the first day of opening: Friday 29th March - 6.30pm to 8.30pm. (This will be a ticketed event to cover the cost of a snack buffet.)
- We are also hoping to hold an Artists At Work Day on 6th April when we will turn the whole gallery into an open studio. We will invite Spring Gathering exhibitors to join the gallery's Resident Artists for a day of creativitiy and great conversations. Please save the date. More details coming soon.
After the exhibition
- The exhibition will be taken down by gallery staff. Unsold work will be put back in its original packaging and stored in a locked store room until you collect it.
- You will be able to collect your work from 26th April to 12th May. Please check our opening times before you come.

What will The Green Man Gallery do for you?
The gallery will:
- Hang/display your work in either the Ground Floor Gallery or the Mezzanine Exhibition Space/Workshop Room
- Ensure that the exhibition is open at the times stated
- Promote the exhibition to gallery visitors
- Produce a simple exhibition catalogue which will include artists’ statements and contact details along with titles of work and prices
- Create a poster to advertise the exhibition
- Print and display posters/fliers around Buxton
as widely as possible)
- Advertise the exhibition and related events as follows:
- on websites: The Green Man Gallery and Explore Buxton
- on The Green Man Gallery Facebook page and other arts pages on FB
- via Instagram
- to the gallery mailing list (1,500+ subscribers);
- in Pure Peak magazine
- via a press release to the Buxton Advertiser
