Costa Alecrim - Art in the Peaks Studio

Growing up, I have always loved drawing. Back in school, I would spend a good deal of time in lessons drawing imaginary landscapes, whilst the teacher was explaining something in front of the class.
With time, this habit became a passion and in 1997 I decided to add something to it – colour – and have been painting ever since.
I have spent a good part of my life working in International Sales and pursuing painting as a hobby, however, during the pandemic, I immersed myself into the world of watercolour and my passion has become an obsession.
“I don’t paint how it looks, I paint how it feels” – Robert Wade
As a self-taught watercolour artist, my inspiration comes from the beautiful local landscapes, rural scenes and iconic buildings in Derbyshire, where I always try to convey a sense of cosiness, peace, perspective and light which you can see in most of my work, notably influenced by fine artists such as Turner, Constable and Rembrandt for their ability to convey nostalgia and light through their work.
Rembrandt used lighting effects (chiaroscuro) to achieve an impression of depth. He came up with the use of a spotlight in painting – a beam of light lightens the head and shoulders of the main figure, while leaving everything else in shadow.
Well, that’s it for now and I sincerely hope you enjoy my artwork and if you like it, please visit my Arts in the Peaks Facebook page for regular updates.
