Springtime Pagan Celebrations of Britain
Felted wool jewellery – necklaces and brooches    £16 each

I have been fascinated by pagan celebrations and symbols for as long as I can remember. Rooted in nature, these celebrations speak of connection to the landscape, the seasons, and the ebb and flow of life.

I have created these pieces especially for the Spring Gathering Exhibition, looking at the Springtime Pagan celebrations across Britain, beginning with Imbolc (also known as St Brigid's Day) at the start of February, which was widely observed throughout Ireland, Scotland and the Isle of Man, marking the beginning of Spring, and the welcoming back of the sun. I have depicted a brooch with a St Brigid's Cross, which was hung on doors at the time to protect against Fire and Evil.

The goddess Eostre* necklace and Hare brooch represent Eostre (or Easter) celebrated in March or April, welcoming the Spring, and celebrating fertility. *SOLD

The final Spring celebration is Beltane, celebrated on 1st May. Beltane celebrates the union of the Goddess and the Green Man; the coming together of male and female energies to create new life. The Beltane tree symbol necklace, represents the tree of life, the pentacle five pointed star brooch is a symbol of protection, adorned with seasonal daisies.

Watercolour                        21 x 17 inches framed       £150

B. Sea Cave
Watercolour                        21 x 17 inches framed       £150

I am a scientist by profession. I came under the influence of a watercolourist in Suffolk in the 1960s. His enthusiasm and the beauty of pure watercolour has become an enduring passion for 50 years.

I am still captivated by the beauty of the medium and the skills required to bring a piece of work to fruition. It is good that the passion is life enhancing but not terminal

Buxton-by-the-Sea is a theme to which Adrienne Brown and I have returned several times since 1990, when we worked for Spa Arts at the Devonshire Royal Hospital. The warmer and wetter it gets...

Laura is a local mixed media artist that studied at Leek School of Art in Staffordshire. She enjoys experimenting with different styles and techniques. In her recent work she is taking a break from her more human storytelling style to experiment with sea and landscape.

A. Discussion in Red
Oil on canvas          26 x 26cm       £160

B. The Piano Man
Ink drawing             13 x 13cm     £85

Discussion in Red is a painting in abstract form. It is for the viewer to muse and converse over. The painting can fit many moods - ones of excitement and enjoyment, or maybe a mood of more sombre thoughts.

The Piano Man is an ink drawing from my imagination. He is a decorative, happy personality and it is easy to become fond of him.

Two hand-woven linen stoles
Textile             Both 79 x 20 inches            £65 each

Using mainly hand-dyed, hand-spun natural fibres and yarns, some from my own flock of Shetland sheep, I design and make textiles. Some are hand woven on my table loom (as exhibited here); others are knitted, embroidered, felted or stitched.

My work is on permanent display at New Mills Gallery and I sell knitting kits of my designs at Ravelry online. I accept commissions for woven scarves in any colours and materials, and enjoy teaching individuals or small groups to knit, including Fair Isle techniques, and to weave.
