"Even if I could go back in time and take art as a GCSE I wouldn’t. Not being hemmed in with the way things should be ensures my artwork comes from my heart and not my head. This is the only way I can show the love and admiration I have for the animal kingdom and, in turn, allow the viewer to feel this magic."
I was born on the 25th July 1980 in Derbyshire, spending most of my childhood in a small village, Peak Dale, surrounded by animals and nature. I would spend nearly every waking hour outside, and from that early age my love of animals began.
At school I started spending time drawing and painting encourage by family and my head teacher the primary school logo I drew took second place in a contest to represent the school.
Admittedly I didn’t find secondary school so smooth. My art teacher discouraged me from the pursuit of the arts, claiming I couldn’t draw and shouldn’t take GCSE art. Because of this art became a hobby, pushed to one side. I studied to become an Engineer and received a Merit for each GNVQ course, then becoming a retail supervisor receiving a Merit in Retail Operations, and eventually became a Blue belt in Kickboxing and an Instructor of Martial Arts.
But I was never more happy than when I had a paintbrush or pencil in my hand (or indeed behind my ear). It's my daily breath of fresh air, a place to escape, a place to really be myself.
So 13 years ago, encouraged once again by family and friends, and inspired by my new born son, I dusted myself off and decided that I was going to pursue art once more and prove my art teacher wrong, and since that point my art has gone from strength to strength.
